Dear Friends and Colleagues,
On behalf of the organizing committee members of COSC 2020, I bid you a warm welcome to the 10th Conjoint Ophthalmology Scientific Conference. This annual educational event will include many fascinating and cutting-edge presenters, sessions, and symposiums addressing all subspecialties and related interests in ophthalmology.
The theme of COSC 2020 is “Sweet & Dangerous”. The prevalence of diabetes is increasing worldwide, particularly in Asia. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Malaysia has escalated to 17.5% in adults above the age of 18 years. Diabetes is a major public health concern in Malaysia that is closely related to increased macro- and microvascular complications, as well as premature and preventable illnesses. In fact, diabetes is the most common cause of blindness among adults aged 20-74 and not many people including diabetics are aware of this.
Therefore, it is to our firm belief that continuous education and partnership with clinical leaders in our field is paramount to understanding how medicines are best used to improve patient outcomes. This educational event aims to highlight the latest updates in the management of major eye diseases, learn from real-world evidence, and translate all this into our clinical practice.
Thanks to the tremendous effort from our local organizing committee; we have an excellent balance of both medical and surgical topics that will optimize your learning. COSC2020 will be a perfect opportunity for you to learn the latest management of such important diseases, as well as network with colleagues from around the region and beyond.
We greatly anticipate your active participation in the meeting. Have a fruitful and interesting time over these next two days.
Dr. Nor Fariza Ngah
National Head of Ophthalmology Services, Ministry of Health
On behalf of the Malaysian Conjoint Committee of Ophthalmology, it is my great pleasure to welcome you all to the 10th Conjoint Ophthalmology Scientific Conference 2020 from 18-19 September 2021. As the first virtual ophthalmic conference in Malaysia, this will be an unforgettable event. The global COVID-19 pandemic has presented us with many challenges, not the least of which is hosting an event of this scale. I would like to congratulate Dr. Hajjah Nor Fariza Ngah and her superb team from the Ministry of Health, Malaysia for their tireless efforts. Thanks also goes out to all the universities collaborating to make this event a success.
I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage all junior doctors to attend this conference and present poster/oral presentations. This will be an ideal platform for all of us in the ophthalmology fraternity to acquire new knowledge.
The theme, 'Sweet and Dangerous' is a very relevant topic in our daily practice in ophthalmology. Diabetes is on the rise in our country, with many Malaysians suffering from visual impairment due to the complications of the disease. I hope that this conference will spark innovations and guide recommendations towards a healthier community in Malaysia.
